That drive had to be cut out, and the top of the hill itself had to be levelled to
make a site for the House. The workmen removed over 12 feet of soil and heavy
clay, which created a good deal of trouble with the foundations. All the materials
for the building were brought up by a purpose-built tramway. But by the end,

Trees only thrive on the correct soils. The underlying rocks here are

identification book or online. You will need to be able to remember the 
shape of the plant and the colour of its leaves or petals. Where it is 
growing can be a clue as well.

walking there see if you can spot one of Miss Alice’s famous plant
