market towns
& villages
Cobbled streets, twisting lanes and modern shopping
malls - Surrey’s market towns and villages have it all - each
with their own individual character. Steeped in history,
timber-framed buildings, castle keeps and abbey ruins,
Surrey was the playground of some of England’s medieval
monarchs. Even smal  hamlets have royal links. The
charming landscape has inspired the arts, as wel  as names
famous for architecture and gardening, from Tennyson to
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lewis Carroll and Gertrude Jekyll.
In Guildford, Farnham, Dorking, Godalming or Haslemere,
you’re never far from beautiful countryside, offering
glimpses of rol ing fields, wooded hil sides or glittering
waterways.  Why not combine a morning’s browsing
in our specialist shops or farmers’ markets with
a stroll along an idyllic rural trail?
Take a break at one of our excel ent restaurants
or cafés where local produce and fair-trade choices

Visit Surrey 2009
are often on the menu.
