Healthierchoices for our customers
At M&S we are committed to making it easier for our
customers to eat a healthier diet. As well as being the first
major UK retailer to remove all hydrogenated fats and oils from
our food, we’ve also taken out all artificial colours and flavourings
too. We’ve also been reducing salt in our food since 1998 and have
significantly cut levels of saturated fat in foods such as sandwiches,
ready meals, crisps and savoury snacks. In addition, we’ve been
working to help make it easier for our customers to make healthier
choices across our food through clear and simple labelling. The Eat
Wel sunflower helps customers see which are the healthier options and
we have also introduced colour coded traffic light labelling on front of
pack to help people see at a glance whether a product is
high, medium or low for nutrients such as fat and salt.
Reducing air miles
We continue to label all our air freighted
food and only use air transportation as
a last resort, using sea and road freight
wherever possible. To help reduce air
miles even further we are focusing our
efforts on extending the UK growing
season for many products. Last year,
for example, by extending the UK
asparagus season by six weeks we
were able to reduce our imports and
save over 600 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
