Welcome to Durham School
from the Headmaster
Young people today must from time to time get frustrated at the bad press which
their generation seems to attract on a seemingly daily basis. When I see our
pupils I share that frustration, because we at Durham School see an entirely
different picture - children from the age of 3 to 18 thriving on all fronts:
academic, social, physical, personal and moral. For this to be possible we need
to have first-rate staff and facilities, underpinned by pervasive values of
compassion, endeavour, aspiration and respect.
For nearly 600 years Durham School has helped generations to take their place
in the world equipped with the knowledge, skills, confidence and principles to
succeed. This remains our aim. I believe that, as you look through this
prospectus, you will pick up something of the flavour of what Durham School is
about, from the Badger Nursery right through to the Upper Sixth. But I hope that
the prospectus will leave you wanting to find out more and that is best done by
visiting us, to see the school in action, to meet the pupils and staff, to find out
why we consider the education we offer to be second to none.
We provide a developing blend of tradition and progress, of family values and a
modern outlook, of balanced educational aims, of high standards and high
expectations, of care and compassion. We welcome pupils from any ethnic
background and any faith. Although we are committed to Christian principles, we
believe that diversity of belief and experience can only enhance the health of the
school.
Above all Durham School is a family and from your very first contact it is our
intention to make you feel part of our community. Our pupils are happy pupils;
that is why they succeed. We want our parents to be happy parents and to be
part of the pupils' success. So please come and see us to discover why a Durham
School education really is Confidence For Life.
