Our history
One of the oldest schools in Britain, Durham School is an independent boarding and
day school offering a complete education for boys and girls from the age of 3 to 18.
It consists of Bow, our own day preparatory school for boys and girls from 3 to 11,
and the Senior School which offers both boarding and day education to boys and girls
from 11-18.
Bow is set in its own beautiful grounds within walking distance of the Senior School. It
started life in 1885 as Bow School and moved to its present site in 1888. In 2006
Bow was re-named Bow, Durham School and was fully incorporated into Durham
School. It shares some facilities and staff with the Senior School, although it has its

own Head.
At the Senior School we are proud of our long history and hallowed traditions that
stretch back very nearly 600 years. We moved to our present site in 1844, a site
which today provides our pupils with the opportunity for a first class, modern
education in a uniquely beautiful and rural setting in the heart of this historic and
rapidly developing university city.
