The Senior School
Chapel
You will find that our beautiful chapel is both literally and figuratively at the heart of
the school. When we ask former pupils what they most miss about Durham School,
their answer is frequently ‘Chapel’. You will gather there with the whole Senior
School several times each week. The younger members of our community at the
Prep School also use the chapel from time to time.
The chapel commands a magnificent view of Durham Cathedral and was built as a
memorial to the 177 Old Dunelmians who died in the two World Wars. Each of the
steps leading up to Chapel symbolises a former pupil whose life was lost in the
Great War (1914-18).

Our school chaplain is always ready and willing to talk to you about anything -
whether school-related or not, faith-related or not.
During your time at Durham School “Chapel” will help you to think about what
makes you tick. You will have the opportunity to hear some excellent speakers, to
prepare for confirmation (if appropriate for you) and to take part in or lead services
in the chapel or the Cathedral.
We hold our annual Christmas Carol Service and one service each term in Durham
Cathedral.
