The Senior School
Boarding or Day?
We are finding that boarding is once again becoming a popular option as more
and more children and their parents become aware of its benefits. Furthermore,
boarding today at Durham School is fun and is the ideal preparation for life
away at university. You will also save a lot of time travelling to and from school.
As a boarder you will find that most facilities are open after school for
supervised activities, while evening and weekend excursions include cooking,
ice-skating, 10-pin bowling, go-karting and trips to local places of interest such
as Bamburgh, the North East Coast and Newcastle, as well as accompanied
visits to the cinema.
There are three boarding options: full boarding (seven nights a week); weekly
boarding (four to six nights, excluding Saturday); and flexible boarding (one, two
or three nights).

Weekly boarding and part-time boarding are options which appeal to busy
families and which you might prefer if you also want to enjoy frequent contact
with home.
As a day pupil you can arrive early and stay on after the school day is finished.
Furthermore, you could avail yourself of our bussing service along popular
routes to help you to get to school. The public transport system in and out of
Durham is excellent and, if you travel by train (for example from Newcastle or
Darlington), we can collect you from the train station each morning and take
you back there each evening. Breakfast and supper are available to all day
pupils, who may stay some nights if the need arises.
