Joining the Senior School
Although the main entry points for the Senior School are in Years 7, 9 and in the
Sixth Form, it is possible to join us at any time, subject to the availability of places.
As you consider your first few weeks in a new school you will probably feel a
mixture of excitement and panic! Wherever you are joining us from and whatever
your age, we strive to make that transition as smooth and stress-free as possible for
you and your parents.
Our links with local feeder schools at 11+, 13+ and 16+ are strong and
prospective pupils are given plenty of opportunities to get to know us before
joining, through Open Mornings and family visits. Taster days (which can include an
overnight stay for potential boarders) are becoming increasingly popular.
On Induction Days and visits prior to joining us, you will be guided round by older
pupils and these new Durham 'brothers' and 'sisters' form a further important layer
Big Band Bonanza for children from local Primary and Prep schools
of family support.
We will give you the reassurance you need when there are new routines to settle
into and new friendships to make. Whether you have travelled from ten miles away
or from the other side of the world to join us, our House staff are well placed to
provide continuity of care throughout your time at Durham School. They are your
and your parents’ first point of contact and are always available to give friendly and
helpful advice on all matters, whether great or small. Our tutor teams will also play
their role in the process of familiarisation with a new set of subjects, a new class and
perhaps a larger site than you have been used to.
