Come here, and you will be magically
transported along with Prince Caspian to
ϐ
creatures of the world’s most popular
children’s storybook. You could write your
own Chronicles. This range of granite
mountains in one corner of County Down
is ideal for adventurous hikes, cycling or
Ǧ
ǡ ϐ
to mar your experience.
Want to know the Irish word for
mountain? It’s ‘sliabh’ which sounds
ǡ ǯ ǫ
‘Slieve’; that’s why many of the names of
the peaks here begin with this, such as
Slieve Donard. But there are more
Ƭ ǡ
Rock, Devil’s Coach Road and Pollaphuca,
which means the hole of the fairies.
The place is so unforgettable that no
wonder one of Ireland’s popular folk songs
is called ‘The Mountains of Mourne’, and
they do indeed ‘sweep down to the sea’.
You can go on a lovely drive where the road
skirts between the foothills and the Irish
Sea, passing a variety of brooding castles
ϐ Ǥ
relax in Victorian resorts such as Rostrevor
and explore Tollymore Forest Park, where
the timber for the Titanic came from.
