Bog? Don’t say ‘ugh’. Instead conjure up the
world of elves and fairies in this dark and
magical biosphere. This nature centre is set
in the heart of the largest bog in Ireland, and
is a mixture of history, wilderness and great
fun. There are indoor and outdoor play and
activity areas, an 18-hole crazy golf course,
a road train and the unlisted wonders of
personal discovery. You and the kids can
learn the way the Irish used to live through
the park’s historic exhibits, explore the fauna
of this delicate ecosystem through a fascinating
exhibition, or embark on wood and bogland
walks with a marvel at every step.
This is on the shores of Lough Ennell in a
park named after Jonathan Swift, the
creator of Gulliver’s Travels, who was born
in Dublin. There is nothing Lilliputian
about the fun on offer, which is as large as
it can get. You may not have time for its
residential activities, but do keep at least
half a day for the children to get as much
as possible from the many adventures it
lays on. These range from canoeing, hill
walking, rock climbing (along with
ϐ‹”•–Ǧƒ‹† –”ƒ‹‹‰ȌǤ Š‡ ˆƒ…– –Šƒ– ‡˜‡”› ”‹•Š
child who has attended once has always
returned tells you why you must not
deprive your kids of this. It goes without
saying that the atmosphere is warm and
friendly. As everywhere in this gorgeous
country, the natural surroundings add to
the joy. This centre will give the kids the
unique Irish experience of outdoor adven-
tures in a virgin raised peat bog.
