The limestone Curragh plain’s water and
grassland are ideal for building the
strong bones of race horses. Combined
ϐ
horses, this has made Kildare the centre
of Ireland’s galloping thoroughbred
industry. The National Stud is a public
private bloodstock farm which was
founded by a quirky colonel in 1900. He
used to sell his foals on the basis of their
astrological charts! The children will be
delighted by the majestic thoroughbreds

This visit can be a daylong picnic. Team it
with the adjacent Japanese Garden laid
from 1906 to 1910.by the renowned
master, Tassa Eida, his son and 40
assistants. Then cross over to St Fiachra’s
Garden where the kids can run free
playing among its trees and water
bodies–and clambering all over the
replicas of the beehive huts of the Skellig
islands. Do make them stop to marvel at
the exquisite underground garden made
of Waterford crystal. A very pleasant
lunch can be savoured in the sylvan café.
