Skellig Island
This is not a zoo, but a wildlife park, one of the
most modern, not just in Ireland, but in Europe.
And it’s just some 13km outside Cork city. It’s a
great place for a day outing with the family in
the company of wildlife, 90 species from all
over the world in open, natural surroundings.
Giraffe, zebra, ostrich and antelope graze and
wander in this grassland, with unobtrusive
barriers separating them from visitors.
Monkeys swing and leap through trees on lake

bounding past. The animals chosen are those
which thrive in a free range environment,
which allows them to roam free while mixed
with other species and with humans. These
species are also able to adjust to the Irish
climate. The park concentrates on protection,
conservation and breeding programmes. The
‘cheetah run’ is a runaway success with kids,
a special device which makes these sinuous
creatures sprint when they are fed every
afternoon at 4. All of you will fall in love with
Larry the ring tailed lemur, one of Fota’s
friendly ambassadors.
