India may boast many ancient caves, but
this is where you can show your children
an eerily lit, million year old network
pillared with stalactites and stalagmites.
These formations have grown, thin strata
by strata, by water dripping through the
roof of the cave, or seeping up from its
ϐǡ
journey through limestone. It is awesome
to see these formations crafted by Nature,
the painstaking artisan. It’s not just their
size, it is their uncanny shapes. The caves
have differently named sections, depending
on these shapes. One is the ‘bar’, with
goblets, bottles and hollow straws. Another
is the ‘crystal room’ with its ‘Madonna’
which in the near darkness seems to be
suspended in air and divine beauty. The
four kilometre network was discovered
only in 1983 by divers. Up in daylight, kids
under 9 can ‘uncover’ their own treasure
in an innovative play centre, or have a cream
topped hot chocolate at the coffee shop.
Killarney Jaunting Cars
Kenmare Place,
Killarney, Co. Kerry
Seeing Killarney in a jaunting cart is as
mandatory as getting photographed on
the bench in front of the Taj Mahal. And
the jarveys (owner drivers) are as
persistent as any guide outside any of our
own monuments. These light, open
carriages drawn by a single, squat, fat,
hairy ankled horse are an old fashioned,
eco-friendly and relaxed way to discover
the hidden delights of the National Park,
which has enough of non secret spectacle
on view. The typically two hour experience
is enhanced by the jarveys, Irish
‘characters’ to a man, who will give you
some history, and lots of ‘blarney’. If you
ǡ ϐ
this jaunt. You can also opt for a package
which includes a cruise on one of the even
more famous lakes of Killarney. ‘Shop
around’ and opt for the jarvey who
appeals most to you.
